COLIN RENTON
PORTOBELLO will show that the strength of the rugby community is superior to that of the mindless vandals who destroyed the Cavalry Park clubhouse when they stage a four-match bonanza to mark its reopening on November 10.
The East League Division One outfit has had support from a range of sources for the restoration project and club president, Iain Goodall, has expressed the club's gratitude to the many people who have given their backing.
Goodall said: We are greatly indebted to the Scottish Rugby Union, Friends of Scottish Rugby, The City of Edinburgh Council, the Gordon Brown Memorial Trust and many, many individuals within the rugby fraternity who have rallied round the club and provided financial support.
And he singled out the efforts of Heriot's Junior Section for particular praise. The Goldenacre kids contributed £500 towards the cost of the work.
The clubhouse, which will benefit from improved facilities, will be opened by Colin Thomson, Head of Community Rugby at the SRU.
The ceremony will be preceded by a match between Portobello Golden Oldies and their counterparts from Gala, while the second XV will play Preston Lodge and a school side will meet Lasswade.
The club's top side will then line up against Hawick Linden in their scheduled East League Division One match.
