Match played: 15 September 2007
On the back off a good victory last week against Northern, Porty where high flying and looking for another scalp. Trinity, the previous week beat dalkeith with only 13 men.
Trinity, due to BAT committments, had some of their 2nd's players drafted into that squad and so where left with 11 players. Hats off to Jonny Smuga, Mikey Reid and Scotty Sutton who stepped in for trinity to make a game of it.
Porty with some more familiar faces back where looking dangerous, even with late call offs, Moray Lyall (big stupid car to pay off), Euann Roy (drafted into the 1st VX) and Robbie Hastie(unable to use a phone). Welcomed returns for big Matt Lynch, Choco and Seany Scoular, with debuts handed out to Robbie(scrum half) and Tom(Wing).
The first minute saw porty on the back foot, a high up and under caught well by tom used the support of burnsy well, burnsy however dwelled too long on the ball and had his attempted kick blocked. Excellent recovering by Seamus saw him clear the danger. It didn't take long before trinity were under the cosh with a lot of porty presence in their 22. paying off with some nice touches shown by debutant Tom to pop Vic over in the corner, Burnsy 'lost at sea' adding the extras from the touchline. Some slick hands in the backs and excellent support play allowed Graham Robertson over in the corner this time unsuccessfully converted by burns the only kick he missed all day.
The third try was the try off the day just outside our opponants 22, mingo ball called allowed mental, who was tackled well by Jonny Smuga, to set up a good platform some quick ball to Choco who cut inside his man and give a rather impressive 'toony flip' outside to Seany Scoular who came on at pace to beat the full back to score under the sticks.
Vic Rickis added portys 4th try of the half in his usual robust manner, and an excellent run saw tom getting a try in his first game for porty.
Half Time: (0) Trinity vs. Portobello (33)
Trinity came out guns blazing in the second half with portobello knowing the game was theirs did stuck it out but where outdone by the trinity pack with a try ten minutes into the second half. Usual credit goes to Hunky and Dougs for some excellent tackling and keeping them out in the long haul.
Seany Scoular, after a very impressive display today, took a knock to the leg and was replaced by Clarky who had some surging runs in midfield thanks to good angles of running. Mental sneaked in with a quick tap penalty from 5m out and clarky late on with a try, sorry clarky no commetry on your try mate i missed it cause i was getting the ball back from the railway.
Full Time: (5) Trinity vs. Portobello (47)
Some excellent rugby today guys, it's really begining to show the boys who are making the training and the results are reflecting that lets keep up the numbers at training this week. Training is at the Jack kane Centre on tuesday from 7.30 (please bring trainers and boots) and thursday From 7( please bring trainers). More points would have been added if we never took the foot off a bit with a pretty poor warm-up thanks to uncertainties surrounding the opposition and Seamus's poor hands, his brother later told me he's having problems with carrying a heavy load about and a telephone issue, lets hope he can get that fixed for next week.
As usual lots of candidates for man of the match debutant Robbie at scrum half had an excellent game and Choco benifitted greatly from it. Dougs finding more form as the weeks go by and stevie Hunt putting in an impressive display. Seany Scoular looking a real live wire in midfield before his knock and Chris Cope must have covered every inch of grass out there, but todays man of the match goes to young Tom Lynch, his first 15-a-side game showed he has good hands and finished off a lovely try, he looked good going forward and put in a couple of tackles as well. well done
Hats off to the trinity boys for putting on a game for us. We've been there ourselves for the 1st XV let alone 2nd's and it's never easy in those situations, i wish them all the best for the season ahead.
